Tormented

00.00 - c. 02.25

The film Tormented is classed as comedy horror, the basic plot is
A bullied teenager comes back from the dead to take revenge on his classmates.

The film opens with Justine Fielding (Tuppence Middleton) being escorted out of school by the police, as other pupils look on. As she is escorted by the police there are numerous jump cuts, the close ups used show her emotion at this time and the mysterious soundtrack emphasizes the dramatic scene. the jump cuts give the scene a edgy montage effect. we will try and create this feeling in parts of our opening scene.

There is a constant groan in the background and at 00.38 secs the 'aah' sound plays throughout. this gives it an angelic like feel yet combined with the image it creates tension and presence by the character.

It then has a flashback to 5 days earlier, where Justine is reading at the funeral of Darren Mullett (Calvin Dean). She starts to talk about him, when Jason Banks (Olly Alexander) stands up in church and calls her a hypocrite because she didn't really know him. He is then thrown out of church by the sadistic PE teacher.

The ending of the opening scene fades out and at the same time the music fades in.

Brief

The titles and opening of a new fiction film called "Dark Days" to last a maximum of 2 minutes.

Kidulthood

Hanway Films
, Stealth Films and Cipher films distributed this film. They are all independent distributors.

The film opens showing a school at lunch break with children playing football, while middle class student Blake (Nicholas Hoult) gives out invitations to a party. The scene switches to Trevor (Aml Ameen) using the drill press, boring out an unseen object later found out to be converting a replica gun into a real one. Alisa (Red Madrell) comments on how she "doesn't feel well" and thinking about not attending the party, but her best friend Becky (Jaime Winstone) encourages her to go. We see Sam (Noel Clarke) spitting into Katie's hair and asking her where his girlfriend Claire (Madeleine Fairley) is, but Katie says she doesn't know. Jay (Adam Deacon) is seen kissing and fingering Claire; she asks Jay if he is scared and he replies negatively. After break, Sam and his gang encounter Trife, Moony and Jay and after insulting them and forcing them to pose for pictures, steal Jays sister's Game Boy and slaps Trife. In class, Trife defends Katie from a group of girls led by Sam, beating her up.

The opening scene of Kidulthood is quite long. It crosscuts between scenes which are happening at the same time. There are a variety of camera shots used. the close ups of the one guy in the workshop show that what he is doing is secretive, we are not shown what he is doing just that he is drilling something. the whole atmosphere seem realistic of a school. School unidforms, young teenagers, slang and attitude, this makes it seem realistic.

For the first 2 minutes there a soundtrack that plays, in the background there is typical sounds of a school day, chatter and noise. The mise-en-scene is presented very well and it is very easy for the audience to understand what is happening and where it is happening.

Opening Title Sequence 'Bad Boys'

Bad Boys is one of my favourite film simply because the two main characters Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, despite their different family backgrounds and situations have a lot of chemistry, they thrive of eachother. Will Smith who plays 'Mike Lawry' is the cool, attractive ladies man who has inherited a substantial amount of money left for him in a trustfund by his family and Martin Lawrence who plays 'Marcus Bennett' is the settled down family man.

The story is of two cops who work in Miami, we start off with tracking shots of the Porsche they are in and then shot reverse shots are used to show the dialogue with close ups to show their comic expressions.

During this scene they stop on a bridge, during their argument two men attempt to steel the car. a big part in this film is the facial expressions. When Marcus drops his food in the brand new car Mike gets angry and the close up helps show his frustration.

A low angle is used on Marcus to show that the guy trying to 'jack' him is hugely bigger than him but he ends up on top.

The music used in the opening scene helps emphasize the drama as being action packed. the sepia tones in the film symbolise the climate of the setting it also makes the atmosphere feel warm but tense at the same time.

The open framing used helps the audience feel part of the situation.

I think this is a brilliant film, all the camera shots and framing add to the chemistry between the characters and the plot.

Opening Title Sequence 'The Waterboy'

The opening of 'The Waterboy' combines speed and action, a lot is going on. there are very few effects used and basic camera shots. it gives an insight into what the rest of the story is about.
it starts of with an establishing shot of the environment consisting of a stadium which the main events of the story occur.

There are a few tracking which follow the action and get you involved in the film.
at the beginning of the film 'The Waterboy' played by Adam Sandler has unique facial expressions which are emphasized by using medium close ups but at the same time showing body language and movements.

The opening scene is simple but effective. it is easy to get into and the audience can easily understand the situation.

Opening Title Sequence '300'

For the title sequence I used iphoto to make a animatic of the pictures I took from the film.

From the beginning of the film 300 even the pictures of 'Warners Bros' etc show that film will be dark and eery. The smoke cover each title and then fading away gives the start mystery. as we move on to the title "300" is surrounded by lighting and smoke. the it changes to blood, this emphasizes the themes of death and destruction.

Then the story starts, a close up of skulls then a baby being held by a man who inspects him like a piece of meat to see if he has any illnesses or deformities.
Throughout the start a voice describes the events. the baby grows up to be a warrior and it shows us how he gets there. Close ups of his face with one eye close as a result of being beat up makes his facial expression chilling.

In all of the scene the lighting is dim but the contrast is high. Rich colours emphasize the physique of the spartan men and accent the authenticity and reality of the village.
The last scene is when he places his helmet on the pearl white ground and shows that he has become a warrior the close up of this emphasizes the importance of that moment.

Even from watching these 5 minutes you can understand even from the title the feel of the film.

Match on Action

For this example of Match On Action we used drinking from a bottle as the example. We started with a Medium Long Shot of Franklin walking towards a chair and then we cut to a close up, keeping in mind the 30 degree rule, of him with the bottle about to be put on his mouth.
